  1. A synthesized, radioactive metallic element
  2. of the actinide series, symbol Md, atomic
  3. number 101, atomic weight 258. It was first
  4. produced by bombardment of Es-253 with helium
  5. nuclei. Its longest-lived isotope, Md-258,
  6. has a half-life of about two months. The
  7. element is chemically similar to thulium. It
  8. was named by the US physicists at the
  9. University of California at Berkeley who
  10. first synthesized it in 1955 for the Russian
  11. chemist Mendeleyev, who in 1869 devised the
  12. basis for the periodic table of the elements.
